QuiltCon Charity Quilt Challenge

The MCMQG joined with fellow quilters in other Tennessee modern quilt guilds to pay homage to historical quilts of Tennessee. The Knoxville MQG invited us to create a modern take on a traditional quilt to celebrate a collection of early Tennessee quilts that will hang at the Tennessee State Museum during QuiltCon. The quilts at the museum were curated by Merikay Waldvogel, a quilt historian and Knoxville MQG member.

Our modern Crown of Thorns quilt is based on a traditional Crown of Thorns made by Mrs. D. P. Walker circa 1840. Jayne Willis (of Twiggy and Opal), our small piecing guru, designed the modern version, then guild members joined in the fun of paper piecing tiny triangles and curves to reflect the language of the shapes in the original red, white, and blue quilt. Jill Zollinger, long-armer extraordinaire, quilted our modern version, with Leslie Piper taking over the final task of binding.
